Community Service Project Essay

Upward Bound

Leaving the hair salons is one of the best feelings in the world. The stylist has worked her magic again and I am getting so many compliments about my hair that I am glowing. I want to make sure those who cannot afford to go the hair salon can get that feeling. Food drives, clothing drives, and volunteering at homeless shelters have already been done by students at my high school. Students only do it because they are required to complete a 75 hour requirement of community service to graduate. . The community services that they do are essential but basic. While meeting basic hunger and clothing needs are important, I believe that there is more that needs to be done to uplift people’s spirits. .   In order for this to happen one of truly make an effort to give their time and talents to help, not just a few cans of food and a jacket. I love to do hair so I am in the process of implementing a service project called X, where I will be enabling the less fortunate in my neighborhood to get their hair done. I believe that the best way for me to serve my community is by sharing my passion with others.

Doing hair is one of my strongest passions; ever since elementary school, when I first received my first doll head for Christmas. People come to me and ask me to do their hair in the latest trends and styles. I use to do it for the money but after putting in so much time in seeing the impact I made on my customers, I realized that I could help so many more people if I did not charge. Going to the regular hair salon is so expensive. Depending on the hair style an individual get done, they are at least going to spend eighty to hundred bucks. That’s a lot of money to spend on hair especially if you have other things to take care of. Why pay almost a hundred dollars than to pay nothing for good results. Doing hair can benefit me and the people as well by making them feel comfortable with themselves as well as beautiful.

Due to economic recession, a lot of people have lost their jobs and because of that they do not have extra money; especially for things like getting their hair done or pampering themselves. In other words, because people are struggling to pay their bills and take care of their households in general it’s a big hassle. So, to them getting their hair done does not matter because they have so many other problems in their lives. However, my upcoming community service project will provide them affordable hair care so people will be able to pay their bills and benefit from my hair care services. My business entails customers coming to my house and sometimes me traveling to their house as well to provide my services. In the world where we like to live well and look good, my services of gratitude will help people in the community to do live beautifully as well as putting a smile in their hearts and mine.

In upcoming fall this project will be expanded to where I will be working on having a built in salon called “Good Results” for anyone who wants to attend. By this time I should have 20 customers per week making ten dollars per head which is way less than a hundred dollars at the regular hair salon.

Leadership

Attending Maynard H. Jackson High School I was apart of the following activities that made me a leader:

  • Maynard Jackson SGA- My position was vice president, helping the president set up activities for the school.
  • Maynard Jackson National Beta Club- My position in this club was being the vice president as well and also making sure that I recruit all the students who made Honor Roll throughout the semester.
Attending Upward Bound as a UB Scholar, I was selected to be the representer for my school and my job was to set up activites for the UB scholars. So far what we have set up was a movie night watching Good Deeds which was successful with popcorn, an ice cream party with different flavors, a dance, talent show and an awards banquet. Being a represnter or a leader of something really shows your leadership skills, and how dedicated you are to doing somethcing and standing out from the rest.

ALL NATURALE

-This future business will effect women that want or (wants) to go natural.
-Also women that are already natural.
-This business will help women embrace their natural hair texture.

I believe in natural hair because I believe all women should appreciate their self-image and realize that natural hair is beautiful. Also it makes you stand out as an individual because most females(girls) at the ages of 11 and up are starting to receive perms. I want to break the habit of chemicals because it can cause damage to the scalp and can result to hair loss.
On Weekends this Fall! Coming soon this Fall!!!!!J
